Western Life Radio February 11, 2013– February 15, 2013 Drivetime Audio Segments

Fastnacht is a German Celebration similar to Mardi Gras, although these traditions reach back to 1584 in  the town of Villingen in the Black Forest. Similar celebrations are throughout Germany, but it is very different outside of the Black Forest and is called Fashing.

The best way to describe it to Americans is that it feels like a combination of Halloween, Groundhog Day and the Fourth of July. The entire family gets involved in the fun. Thousands wear hand carved wooden masks, participate in parades and make a lot of noise to scare away winter. Schools let the kids out for several days of parades and events.

It builds up to Fastnacht, where at midnight they burn the straw that filled their costumes for the past week, which brings on Ash Wednesday--40 Days before Good Friday. Crazy fun things include the Donkey, which pictured above, steals sausages from the Butcher Shop, hangs them around his ears and runs through the streets.

Every small town in the Black Forest has it's own traditions, stories and Activities. There is a lot of Charm and Fun as part of this Celebration.   I have never seen anything else like it.
